What Exactly is Meditation?
Meditation is an ancient practice where people focus their attention and eliminate distractions. It involves techniques like mindfulness, concentration, and visualization to promote self awareness, relaxation and mental clarity.
Meditation offers numerous benefits for both your mind and body.
Starting meditation practice is easier than you might think. Always be patient and kind to yourself. In the beginning, your mind will wander, and that is normal. Don’t get frustrated, gently guide your focus back each time.
Here are some simple steps to get started.
Choose a comfortable space. It is important to find a quiet and comfy spot where no one will disturb you. For example, it can be a cozy chair in the corner of your room.
Set a time. Decide on a dedicated time for your meditation practice. It can be early morning, during lunch break, or before bed time. Remember consistency is important. You will get more benefits doing meditation every day for 10 min than once a week for 20 minutes. Start short, just a few minutes to maybe 5-10 min and gradually increase the duration as you grow more comfortable.
Posture: sit comfortably with your spine straight. You can sit cross-legged on the floor, and may use a cushion, or special meditation blanket.
Focus on your breath. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Pay attention to the sensation of your breath when it is entering and leaving your nostrils. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring it back to your breath.
Mindfulness meditation. This is a popular technique which involves you focusing on the present moment - your breath, bodily sensations, or sounds around you. When thoughts arise, acknowledge them without judgment and return your focus.
Guided meditation: use apps or online resources to assist you. They provide instruction and help you stay on the truck. This is my favourite Youtube channel for meditation: https://www.youtube.com/@bohobeautifulmeditation
Mantra meditation: repeat a word or phase (mantra) silently. It could be something simple like ”peace” or “love”. Focus on that mantra, whenever stress arises - don't judge it, focus on your breath and return to your mantra.
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. Experiment with different techniques and find what resonates with you. Consistency matters more than perfection.
